Sapphires and More at The Willows

By Mr Consistency

Besides chasing gold and fish in various states, Wonder Woman and I have been avoiding winter for six years by fossicking at The Willows, about 80km west of Emerald, on the Central Queensland gemfields. On our first visit we booked in for four days, which success turned into six. Continuing success brings us back…for longer.

Last year, when Wonder Woman reversed the van onto our site on April 6th, we were once again the first fossickers of the year to set up at The Willows Gemfields Caravan Park, setting a new personal record for being early. It was like old home week as our hosts, Dave and Val Lee, welcomed us again. It didn't take long to set up the van and retrieve our fossicking gear from storage at the home of two local ladies who have become close friends. The next day being Sunday, we went to the markets at nearby Sapphire seeking metal drums for soaking wash. The Sapphire markets are great for fossicking equipment, books, souvenirs and a wonderful range of sapphires and other gemstones, rough or cut or in jewellery.
