One Man’s Trash

Me, I’m a collector of all things old. My collecting interests started with old telegraph insulators and this sort of morphed into bottle collecting, which led to digging for bottles and it was while digging for bottles that I was introduced to a Minelab metal detector.
Well, one thing led to another and now I’m also a relic hunter. Ever since buying a Minelab Explorer and finding my first dog registration tag, I’ve had an obsession with collecting South Australian dog rego tags. The brass tags first started being used in 1885 and finished in 1951. Think about it. Every farm had at least one dog so multiply that by 65 years and that leaves a lot dumps to detect for these fantastic little items.
One of my favorite spots for detecting is in the scrub adjacent to a small country farming town. The area was well known to bottle hunters in the 1970s and ‘80s and has had the acres of surface dumps scraped, scratched and dug over ever since. I’ve been fortunate to pull many dog tags out of this area as well a whole hoard of other goodies.
