Back to the Willows

By John Menadue

After a six-year absence it was well and truly time to get back to one of my great loves – fossicking for sapphires on the Central Queensland gemfields. So, at the start of the 2010 winter season, I headed off with the great love of my life, aka my wife Lesley (well, someone has to do the digging) and eventually arrived at the Gem Air Caravan Park at the Willows.

The Gem Air Caravan Park has been quite correctly, in my opinion, described as an oasis in the gemfields. Steve and Rae Walmsley operate the park and during the many times I have stayed there, I’ve never been disappointed with the welcome, the accommodation or the unique atmosphere of the park. After driving up to the reception office, I got out of the car and before I had a chance to say a word, Rae walked towards us and said ‘Hello John’. Not bad given that we hadn’t been there since 2004.
