An Australia Day Nugget

By Rex Whitehead

I thought the readers of Gold Gem & Treasure might be interested in the accompanying photograph of my old mate with his 9-ounce nugget, which came out of the ground exactly as you see it.

He found it on Australia Day this year, which, in case you missed it, was Saturday 26th January, and he wants to remain anonymous. I discussed this with him at his camp and while he is aware he will be recognized by the locals and his mates, he is okay with that. The nugget is from ‘somewhere in North Queensland’ which covers a pretty big area.

As for myself, I picked up a 2kg lump of quartz and ironstone recently and there was some nice gold throughout the interface of the two types of rock. It was sitting on the surface and it would have been walked past or driven over on numerous occasions.
